About Birmingham

ABOUT BIRMINGHAM:

Birmingham, Alabama offers wonderfully diverse neighborhoods and communities, rich in tradition and genuine southern hospitality, where generations of families and newcomers choose to live.

Birmingham is home to The University of Alabama at Birmingham, UAB Hospital, and St. Vincent’s Hospital, internationally recognized for advancements in medical research.  The International Baccalaureate School (grades 9-12) and The Alabama School of Fine Arts (grades 7-12) consistently rank among the top academic high schools in America.

A scenic panoramic view of the city can be appreciated at Vulcan Park.  History and science are noteworthy at the Civil Rights Institute and the McWane Science Center.  Rickwood Field, America’s oldest ballpark is also the oldest pro ballpark still in use in the entire world.  Each year in February, the Mercedes Marathon draws thousands of participants from all over the world.

For entertainment, there is the Alys Robinson Stevens Performing Arts Center, Alabama Symphony Orchestra, Red Mountain Theater, City Stages Music Festival, and The Alabama Theater.  NASCAR, motorcycle, and outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the Talladega Superspeedway, Barber Motorsports Park, and the Bass Pro Shop, less than a 40-minute drive.  For unrivaled football passion, Alabama  “Roll Tide” and Auburn “War Eagle” pride are voiced each and every day. Metro Birmingham is recognized by the New York Times and culinary magazines for the many fine dining establishments and the variety of cuisines featuring local and international specialties.

Mountain Brook and Homewood are very desirable communities within a few miles to downtown Birmingham, offering residents superb schools and desirable neighborhoods.  Mountain Brook is distinguished with the Birmingham Zoo and the Birmingham Botanical Gardens.  English Village, Crestline Village, and Mountain Brook Village offer specialty boutiques for shopping and charming outdoor cafes.  Samford University, in Homewood, is set in a scenic Williamsburg-style campus.  Homewood also offers a central shopping district with the best in local establishments boasting art galleries and fine antique stores.

Hoover and Vestavia Hills continue with the quality of life families and residents have grown to appreciate.  Exceptional schools and neighborhoods abound in both of these suburbs.  In Hoover, enjoy a Birmingham Barons baseball game at Regions Park Stadium, also host of the SEC Baseball Tournament.  Watch your favorite senior PGA golfers on the Champions Tour at the Regions Charity Classic held at Ross Bridge Golf Resort, one of ten courses of the famed Robert Trent Jones golf trail.  Vestavia Hills is known as the Jewel City atop Shades Mountain.  Its picturesque location in the foothills of the Appalachian Chain also provides a beautiful panoramic view of the city.

Chelsea, Pelham, Helena, and the Town of Mt. Laurel are Over-the-Mountain communities close enough to the city limits of Birmingham and far enough removed to feel like you live in a small town.  Chelsea’s population is rapidly increasing due to new home construction in the area.   Chelsea’s Motto: “It’s All About Family”.  Oak Mountain State Park, in Pelham, is Alabama’s largest park providing 9,940 acres for recreational activities including camping, hiking, swimming, horseback riding, and golf.  Helena, with its Old Town historic district dating back to the mid 1800’s, has been recognized as Alabama’s safest place to live.  The Town of Mt. Laurel, a traditional neighborhood development, mixes the amenities of today with the charm of years gone by, emulating the architecture and streetscapes of city neighborhoods from your childhood.

There is a renaissance in downtown Birmingham with condos, lofts and in town living flourishing.  Current and future downtown projects include the renovation of the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex and entertainment district, and redevelopment of the Railroad District, designed with water features, restaurants, shops, condos, and entertainment venues. The Highway 280 Corridor, connecting downtown Birmingham with its neighboring suburbs, provides access to many of the city's most desirable places to live, shop, dine, and be entertained.

Birmingham is reclaiming its motto as "The Magic City".
